Game Jam at the School of Games


In February 2021, another cross-training project took place at the School of Games.

As with the first Game Jam, participants were able to develop online games. After a week of prototyping, the games were presented to the groups online and played.

In February, the participants of the School of Games were once again able to demonstrate their creativity and give free rein to their ideas. They presented the games they had developed themselves. After having spent the last semester working on the topics of design, management and programming (our three main areas of training at the School of Games), they were now able to develop and present their own 2D puzzle and develop strategies for marketing.

Die Puzzles sind das Ergebnis der kreativen Arbeit von 15 Kleingruppen mit Teilnehmer*innen aus allen Kursen der School of Games. Der „Game Jam“ selbst wurde von den Game Business Teilnehmer*innen entwickelt. Dabei bekamen sie Unterstützung von unseren Dozenten Kevin Glaap, Utz Stauder und Torsten Sendler.

As part of their training at the School of Games, participants must go through a combination of theory and practical applications in what is known as prototyping. In contrast   zum ersten Prototyping, which took place in the first week of the new school year and mostly dealt with board and card games, the second prototyping aimed to strengthen the practical applications of the training. This prototyping allowed participants to code the correct game mechanics and create digital designs for characters and environments.

So haben zum Beispiel einige Teilnehmer*innen ihre eigenen Soundeffekte oder Musik zu den Spielen entwickelt. Levin Dürrschmid (Game Business) sagt dazu: „Mit das Schwierigste war es, beim Designen der Spiele an alles zu denken. Die offensichtlichen Sachen vergisst man nämlich oft, wie eine Lautstärke-Regelung, eine Möglichkeit das Spiel zu verlassen oder ein kleines Tutorial, wie das Spiel überhaupt funktioniert.“

The participants were also able to rate the individual games. For example, there was an award for the best gaming atmosphere, one for the greatest challenge and one for the most entertaining game. The lecturers' assessment naturally focused on the technical implementation. The next game jam in May will challenge the students in a new discipline: 3D!

We are excited to see the next results and in the meantime we wish the participants a lot of fun playing their own creations.
